The mission of Owls Head Montessori is to nurture confidence, independence, and creativity in its students while they learn, paying special attention to social development. These qualities lay an important foundation for a child’s school years and life-long growth. In achieving this goal, it is the role of a Montessori educator to consider each child’s particular needs when teaching.

The Montessori method was developed in Italy in the early nineteen hundreds by its namesake, Dr. Maria Montessori. The most signifIcant aspect of the Montessori approach is its recognition and respect for individual differences. In the Montessori classroom, each child is free to learn at his or her own pace.

The Montessori method seeks to create a learning environment in which a child’s specific age and growth are primary. In a Montessori classroom, playthings, books, and exercises are within easy reach of young children and furnishings are scaled to size.

This child-centered approach also applies to Montessori teaching methods. In early childhood education, this translates into a focus on sensory-based (literally hands-on) learning. Montessori exercises are designed to enhance fine motor control, coordination, concentration, and independence.

At Owls Head Montessori, teaching children is a collaborative effort. In order to best understand the needs of each student, we foster a strong line of communication between teachers and parents.

The teaching staff at Owls Head Montessori are experienced child care professionals. All teachers meet or exceed the Office for Children qualifications set up by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
